Overcrowding in County Jails Is Not an Easily Resolved Issue

Share

Regarding the series of articles that has been in the L.A. Times on overcrowding in Orange County jails: Why not put a new jail where the present animal shelter is located (561 S. The City Drive in Orange)?

This would seem to be a win-win solution because:

* Neighbors could not complain about a “jail in their back yard” because one already exists; the Lacy Jail is right next door to the animal shelter.

* The county already has access to the land where the animal shelter is located, so acquiring the land would not be costly.

* Moving prisoners to the courts would not be hard because a new jail in Orange would be centrally located to the courts.

* People are not likely to mind an animal shelter moved to their neighborhood nearly as much as they would mind a jail, so it would be rather simple to move the animal shelter.
