It was a great start to a lousy day for Ty Detmer and fourth-ranked Brigham Young.

Hours after Detmer won the Heisman Trophy, the Cougars saw any hope of winning a national championship vanish against Hawaii on a misty Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

Detmer threw four interceptions while Hawaii’s quarterback Garrett Gabriel passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Rainbows (7-5) beat the Cougars for the second consecutive season, 59-28.

“It takes a lot away (from winning the Heisman),” Detmer said. “You can’t enjoy it like you should be able to because we’re riding home on a long flight.”

The Cougars (10-2) already had clinched the Western Athletic Conference championship and a trip to the Holiday Bowl.

Near the end of the game, fans reminded Detmer of his closest Heisman challenger, Raghib (Rocket) Ismail of Notre Dame.

“The Rocket should have got it,” they yelled.
