A San Diego woman suffering from emphysema became the third single-lung transplant recipient at the University of California at San Diego Medical Center after a four-hour operation Monday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Sheila Valle, 56, was reported in critical but stable condition after surgery, said spokeswoman Nancy Stringer. She described Valle’s condition as normal during the first 24 hours after a transplant.

Valle’s surgery was the 13th organ transplant performed by the medical center’s heart and lung transplant team since the establishment of UCSD’s heart-lung transplant program in July, 1989. The 12 previous transplant patients, including two who underwent similar single-lungs transplants in June and October, continue to do well, according to Stringer.
