Two Groups Honored for Preservation Work
Two groups involved in preservation of the Santa Monica Mountains have been honored by California parks officials for their “outstanding volunteer efforts” to protect the state’s natural resources.
The Mountains Restoration Trust and Santa Monica Mountains chapter of the California Native Plant Society were among 37 groups, individuals and corporations that received “Take Pride in California” awards at ceremonies in Sacramento earlier this week.
Established in 1981, the Malibu-based restoration trust is involved in land acquisition and preservation and in public education. It manages the 650-acre Cold Creek Canyon Preserve in the Santa Monica Mountains and has acquired 1,272 acres of mountain land.
The native plant society is made up of amateur and professional botanists interested in protection of California’s native plants.
MCA/Universal Inc. in Universal City also was honored for efforts to educate employees and the general public about the environment through a recycling program and other activities.
The annual awards program is co-sponsored by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and the American Express Philanthropic Program. The state award recipients will also be considered for national “Take Pride in America” awards.
