Indiana knew whom to turn to when Vanderbilt started to come back in the second half.

The Hoosiers turned to their young stars, sophomore Calbert Cheaney and freshman Damon Bailey, and put Vanderbilt away, 84-73, at Nashville, Tenn.

Cheaney scored 30 points and Bailey scored all of his 13 points in the final 11:17 as the seventh-ranked Hoosiers improved to 5-1.

Cheaney, who has scored in double figures in his past 19 games, made 11 of 13 shots from the field, including both of his three-point attempts, and was six for seven from the free-throw line.

The Hoosiers took advantage of six turnovers during the run and ran their motion offense to near-perfection, scoring all but one of their eight baskets inside.

No. 4 Syracuse 86, North Carolina State 79--Dave Johnson had 24 points and Billy Owens added 21 as the Orangemen scored a victory in the ACC-Big East Challenge at Syracuse.

The Orangemen took control of the game in the final seven minutes after North Carolina State (3-1) took a 70-68 lead on Rodney Monroe’s reverse layup with 7:09 to play.

Wichita State 74, No. 12 Alabama 71--Junior center Phil Mendelson blocked a layup with 12 seconds to play in overtime and made two free throws with 6.6 seconds to go as Wichita State upset the Crimson Tide at Wichita.

The 6-foot-11 Mendelson, who scored only four points, blocked the shot of Melvin Cheatum, who led Alabama with 20 points. Cheatum’s three-pointer with four seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime tied 68-68.

Claudius Johnson led the Shockers with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

No. 16 Oklahoma 96, No. 23 Texas 88--Jeff Webster scored 35 points as the Sooners broke away in the final minutes to ruin the Longhorns’ home opener at Austin, Tex. It was the Sooners’ seventh victory in a row over Texas dating to 1977.

EAST

Doug Overton had a career-high 36 points as La Salle rallied to beat Brigham Young, 93-81, at Philadelphia. Jack Hurd added 28 points for the Explorers; Mark Heslop led the Cougars with 27 points. . . . Senior forward Anthony Avent scored six of his 20 points in a 12-2 spurt as Seton Hall defeated Clemson, 78-62, at Syracuse in the ACC-Big East Challenge. Sophomore guard Terry Dehere had 25 points for Seton Hall; Clemson (4-1) was led by center Dale Davis’ 15 points.

SOUTH

Reserve center Anthony Douglas scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Memphis State past Murray State, 85-78 at Memphis, Tenn. Douglas, working inside, made 10 of 13 shots from the field and five of seven free throws before fouling out with a minute to play.

MIDWEST

Duan Cole scored 20 points as Creighton beat Missouri, 74-68, at Omaha, Neb., for its first victory over the Tigers at Omaha since 1934. Bob Harstad added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Creighton. Jamal Coleman led the Tigers (2-2) with 18 points. . . . Acie Earl scored 19 points and had a career-high eight blocked shots to help lead Iowa to a 72-68 victory over Northern Iowa at Iowa City. . . . Mark Anglavar scored 16 points and Ron Curry had 13 in the second half as Marquette beat Wisconsin, 69-58, at Milwaukee for its first victory over the Badgers in four years.

SOUTHWEST

Tracy Ware scored 21 points and Reggie Jordan had 20 to lead New Mexico State to a 77-70 victory over Texas El Paso at El Paso. The Miners got 12 points each from Marlon Maxey, Mark McCall and David Van Dyke.

WEST

Reed Watson and Pat Holbert each had 12 points as all 15 players scored for San Diego in an 84-49 victory over Pomona-Pitzer at San Diego. . . . Tony Bennett made two free throws with four seconds to play to lead Wisconsin-Green Bay to an 83-80 victory over Colorado at Boulder, Colo.. . . .Josh Grant scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Utah held off visiting Utah State, 84-76. Jay Goodman led Utah State with 28 points.
