COLLEGE BASKETBALL : WOMEN’S ROUNDUP : USC Beats San Diego State, 68-54
Freshman Lisa Leslie’s 20 points and 23 rebounds led No. 21 USC to a 68-54 victory over San Diego State Tuesday night at the Sports Arena.
Leslie’s rebounds fell one shy of the USC single-game record, set in 1984 by Cheryl Miller. The Trojans outrebounded San Diego State, 65-44.
Coming off its first loss of the season, USC (3-1) held San Diego State scoreless through the first 12:11 of the second half, building a 20-point lead. Joni Easterly scored three baskets during an 8-0 run to make it 53-33 with 7:49 remaining.
The Aztecs (2-2) also suffered a scoring drought in the game’s opening minutes, spotting the Trojans 12 points before getting their first basket at 15:05.
Crystal Lee scored 25 points and Kiesha Garnes added 10 points for San Diego State.
Cal State Long Beach 106, Arizona 62--Penny Moore scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead 11th-ranked Long Beach at University Gym.
The 49ers (2-1) raced to a 62-31 lead in the first half on 53% shooting, including four for seven from three-point range--and defense that held Arizona to 11 baskets in 33 shots.
Dana Wilkerson had 17 points and Trise Jackson 15 for Long Beach. Melissa Handley led Arizona (3-3) with 20 points.
