The City Council agreed unanimously Tuesday to appoint a committee to consider increasing the maximum allowable height of commercial buildings in the city from the current two-story limit to four or six stories.

The committee, proposed by Mayor Thomas Breazeal, will also consider his suggestion that the city allow stores on the first floor of commercial buildings, service businesses on the second and third floors, and residential uses on the top floors.

Breazeal also suggested the committee come up with recommendations about parking, sign requirements and building facades.
