The Montreal power play, once the best in the NHL, is now the worst with only 17 goals in 137 chances. But it was working Thursday night as Stephan Lebeau and Brian Skrudland scored power-play goals at Boston to lead the Canadiens to a 6-4 victory over the Bruins.

The victory moved Montreal to within a point of the Adams Division-leading Bruins.

Benoit Brunet, Eric Desjardins, Stephane Richer and Guy Carbonneau had the other goals for Montreal.

Lyndon Byers, Dave Christian, Craig Janney and Randy Burridge scored the Boston goals.

Buffalo 4, Philadelphia 3--Rick Vaive scored on his own rebound with 4:02 remaining to lift the Sabres over the Flyers at Philadelphia.

Philadelphia had rallied from a 3-0 deficit to get even on a second-period goal by Mike Ricci and third-period goals by Scott Mellanby and Derrick Smith.

Toronto 2, Minnesota 1--Doug Shedden tied the game with 1:23 to play, and Rob Ramage scored the winning goal with 2:03 remaining in overtime as the Maple Leafs gained a split in their home-and-home series with the North Stars at Bloomington, Minn.

Maple Leaf goalie Peter Ing made 29 saves as Toronto stopped Minnesota’s three-game winning streak.

Chicago 5, New York Islanders 2--At Chicago, Steve Larmer had two goals and three assists, and goaltender Ed Belfour earned his NHL-leading 17th victory as the Blackhawks extended the Islanders’ winless streak to seven games.
