Bernhardt Gives Calendar to D.A.

San Diego City Councilwoman Linda Bernhardt turned over her 1990 office calendar to Dist. Atty. Edwin Miller on Friday, calling again for a quick resolution of Miller’s investigation into activities by the embattled District 5 councilwoman.

Bernhardt, gathering three newspaper reporters at her side for the short walk from City Hall to Miller’s office, turned over the calendar requested by Miller’s office in a Dec. 4 memo to Bernhardt.

“I’m about to go into a recall campaign, the first in the history of San Diego, and I’m not going to allow the D.A. . . . to hold this over my head,” Bernhardt said. On Thursday, city election officials announced that a group seeking to oust Bernhardt had qualified a recall bid for the ballot early next year.

Miller’s spokesman, Steve Casey, who received the calendar from Bernhardt, said a quick end to the probe is “highly unlikely.”

In a letter to Bernhardt on Thursday, Miller confirmed that his office is investigating her, but Casey has declined to describe the probe. Knowledgeable sources have said that an investigator for Miller is asking a wide-ranging series of questions about many issues, including Bernhardt’s outstanding campaign debt and her former political consultant’s contract with the developer of a controversial housing project in Bernhardt’s former council district.

Councilman John Hartley, who received an identical demand for his office calendar, said Friday that he would turn it over early next week, after copying it.
