Homeless Teen Shot in Party Fight, Dies

A 17-year-old transient was killed early Saturday after she was shot in the chest during an altercation at a party in Southeast San Diego, police said.

The homeless teen was identified as Brandi Rankin.

A 17-year-old male surrendered to authorities early Saturday evening in the shooting.

Sgt. Chuck Peck said dispatchers received a call at 12:29 a.m. of a person shot in the 3800 block of Menlo Avenue.

While en route to the scene, a patrol car dispatched to investigate the shooting was flagged down by friends of the injured teen-ager in the 4200 block of University Avenue, several blocks from the reported shooting.

“She was dead in the car,” Peck said. “She had been shot in the chest.”
