One man was fatally shot and another escaped uninjured early Monday after they were abducted from a Santa Ana tavern, driven to a secluded area in Malibu and robbed by their two captors, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

The victims were apparently kidnaped from the bar at about 10 p.m. Sunday by two men in a red compact car. The survivor told authorities the abductors drove around for nearly four hours before arriving in Malibu, close to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

The two men were robbed, Deputy Sheriff Rafael Estrada said. The assailants then shot one man in the back of the head, Estrada said, “and that’s when (his companion) managed to escape--just ran and hid in the brush in the area. When daylight came, he hiked down and was able to notify the Sheriff’s Department.”

Authorities found the other kidnap victim’s body on Decker Road, close to Pacific Coast Highway. The victim, said to be in his 20s, has not been identified. The survivor’s name was withheld.

Officials are trying to identify the bar involved.
