Paul and Vivian Bowman and their resurrected Super Country Band will appear Monday night at Leo’s Little Bit O’ Country in San Marcos, in a benefit concert to raise money to buy Christmas toys for needy kids. The toys will be given to the Walden Environment, a nonprofit organization that finds foster homes for children throughout California.

In the 1970s, the Bowmans--he plays the guitar and they both sing--and their Super Country Band regularly plied the Los Angeles country nightclub circuit. The band included such future heavyweights as drummer Steve Duncan and steel guitarist J.D. Manes, currently with the Desert Rose Band, and Highway 101 guitarist Jack Daniels. They’ve all agreed to participate in the reunion concert.

Bowman, 51, is also a longtime deejay and TV personality. For the last nine years, he’s been hosting the nightly “Paul Bowman Million Dollar Country Music Show” on Los Angeles radio station KFOX-FM (93.5).

Sunday nights, he hosts a three-hour country oldies show on Escondido’s KOW-FM (92.1).

He’s also got a half-hour country video show that airs Friday mornings, starting at 8, on KTTY Channel 69, as well as on various San Diego cable outlets throughout the week.

The country TV show has been on the air since August, 1988, shortly after the Bowmans moved from Los Angeles to Vista.

All three programs focus on traditional country music--old-time twang--instead of the sanitized crossover stuff that currently dominates the national country charts, Bowman said.

“Traditional country music is music that tells about the American way of life, the way we live,” Bowman said. “It’s human stories everyone can identify with. The music is plain and simple; it’s the music of the common person, not the fancy person, and I want to give it all the exposure I can give it.”
