Voters Should Make Bonelli Park Decision

Share

On Dec. 3, 1990, the Covina City Council voted to support San Dimas’ effort in opposing the commercial expansion of Bonelli Park.

However, the issue of expansion of Bonelli Park is not an issue concerning the park at all, it is a simple issue of local control. The citizens and voters of San Dimas should have the absolute right to control whether or not the park is commercially expanded. Once again we have another case here of county intrusion and control of a community without any voice at all on the issue by the people.

Why can’t we amend the County Charter to allow the voters of a city, such as San Dimas, to vote their preference on such an issue and make the vote count as a mandate that the county has to honor? We do it at the state level through the initiative process. Why shouldn’t local government be afforded the same opportunity?
