Maywood : 2 Brick Buildings Razed Under Quake Safety Law

Share

A battle that raged for years between Maywood city leaders and property owners who wanted to save two brick buildings that were not earthquake-safe ended last week with the demolition of both buildings.

The Fernwood Motel, a three-story, 56-room hotel on Slauson Avenue that had been abandoned and boarded up since 1984, and a three-story office and apartment building nearby were razed because they violated a 6-year-old city earthquake safety ordinance.

“Both buildings were a real threat in the event of a major earthquake,” Maywood City Atty. Cary Reisman said.
