Symphony Sets Contest for Young String Instrumentalists, Vocalists

WHITTIER — The Rio Hondo Symphony Assn. is sponsoring the orchestra’s 23rd annual Young Artists Competition.
String instrumentalists and vocalists have until Dec. 28 to submit applications. Auditions will be held Feb. 16 at Whittier College.
In addition to appearing as a guest soloist at the orchestra’s April 28 concert, the aspiring young musicians who place first and second will receive cash awards of $500 and $300 provided by the Symphony Guild, co-sponsors of the contest.
String instrumentalists and vocalists through age 26 are eligible. Vocalists must sing an aria from a grand opera or oratorio and one song each from lieder repertoire and light opera. Instrumentalists must play a concerto and one contrasting selection.
Competitors must perform their selections from memory and will be judged by three adjudicators to be announced later.
