A 75-year-old man lost his right leg and his left foot when he was hit by a freight train Wednesday in Oxnard, police said.

Manuel Petris was in critical condition in the intensive care unit at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A Southern Pacific train was traveling north about 5 m.p.h. near the Oxnard Transportation Center, 200 E. 4th St., about 1:20 a.m., Sgt. Fred Berry said. The train was dropping off freight cars when it struck the man, police said.

Police had not determined why Petris was on the tracks or why he did not get out of the way.

Oxnard police officers, who responded to a report of the accident, found Petris under the train engine.

The train was traveling between Colton in Santa Bernardino County and Surf in Santa Barbara County, Southern Pacific spokesman Bob Hoppe said.
