2 Killed by 6.5 Quake in Eastern Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan —
A strong earthquake shook a wide area of eastern Taiwan on Thursday, causing landslides and killing two construction workers who were knocked off buildings where they were working, police said.
The Central Weather Bureau said the 11:01 a.m. quake had a magnitude of 6.5 and was centered on the east coast about six miles south of Hualien. The temblor also was felt in Taipei, about 85 miles to the north.
