BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Santa Margarita, Fountain Valley to Meet for Title

Santa Margarita High School used a full-court press in the fourth quarter to pull away from Laguna Hills and win, 70-65, in the semifinals of the Arroyo Grande boys’ basketball tournament Friday.

Trailing, 51-50, entering the fourth quarter, Santa Margarita switched to full-court press and outscored Laguna Hills, 20-14.

Santa Margarita will play Fountain Valley for the championship at 8 tonight. David Perry had four steals and eight points in the fourth quarter, and Jeff Layne had 12 of his 18 points in the second half for the Eagles (5-2). Dan Bathey led Santa Margarita with 20 points.

Fountain Valley 65, Anaheim 44--Fountain Valley outscored Anaheim, 15-2, in the fourth quarter to advance to tonight’s championship game.

Adam Ziebarth and Barrett Hogan each scored 16 for Fountain Valley. Greg Cole scored 16 for Anaheim (5-2).

In the El Dorado tournament:

Downey 92, El Dorado 74--Brett Tomko scored 19 points ,and Matt Raya added 16 for El Dorado (3-3), which plays Whittier Christian at 10:30 a.m. today in the consolation round.

In the Beverly Hills tournament:

Redondo 53, El Toro 52--Rob Johnson and Jeremy Hogue are on a football recruiting trip to Notre Dame. Without them El Toro (4-2) lost in the semifinals on free throw in the final seconds.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

San Clemente 54, Newport Harbor 47--Bill Hagedorn had 20 points for host San Clemente (5-2), which made nine of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter. Huy Nguyen and Justin McIntee each scored 15 for Newport Harbor (4-2).

Saddleback 65, Mission Viejo 56--Mission Viejo tied the score, 45-45, with six minutes left before Saddleback went on a 10-2 run. Jason Register had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Luis Estrella had 12 points and seven rebounds for Saddleback (2-3). Mission Viejo is 2-2.

Buena Park 66, Bolsa Grande 49--Richard Harvey scored 16 points and 14 assists and Angel Barrios scored 15 points for Buena Park (4-2).

Valencia 63, Villa Park 62--John Wilson made a 15-footer with four seconds left in overtime for Valencia. Aaron Boone of Villa Park had tied it in regulation on a free throw with eight seconds left,

Century 58, Sonora 57--Chris Lopez hit both ends of a one-and-one with three seconds to go, and Sonora traveled on the subsequent inbounds play as Century (3-2) held on. Darvin Thompson scored 14 points for Century.

Laguna Beach 92, St. Margaret’s 74--Senior Ryan Westendorf scored a career-high 43 points for host St. Margaret’s. Westendorf also had 20 rebounds and was 14 for 17 on free throws. Laguna Beach’s Josh Borella scored 32.

Irvine 77, Woodbridge 46--John Molle scored 31 points for Irvine (6-0). Keith Boothroyd added 18 for Irvine, which led, 20-8 after one quarter and 39-14 at the half.

Dana Hills 63, El Modena 55--Dana Hills outscored El Modena, 20-6, in the first quarter. Keith Barnett had 17 points for Dana Hills (2-3).

Costa Mesa 66, Santiago 56--Forward Jeff Pickens scored 31 points and 15 rebounds for visiting Costa Mesa (1-5).

Orange 65, La Habra 53--Carlos Duran had 27 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, six steals and eight assists, and Thu Huynh had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Orange (3-3).
