Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Rain, Snow Trigger Traffic Problems

Freezing rain and snow stung the East, triggering a rash of traffic pileups, while a stubborn storm system spread snow over the mountains of the West for the fourth straight day. Police in New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania reported scores of automobile accidents. Snow mixed with sleet fell across parts of Vermont, Connecticut, Maine and New York. More snow also was expected over Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, weather officials said. Snow fell over Minnesota and Wisconsin, where up to eight inches had already accumulated.
