A prisoner who escaped from the downtown County Jail on Friday--just hours after he had been sentenced to 10 years in prison for assault with a deadly weapon--was captured early Sunday in North Park, police said.

Robert Anthony O’Donnell was captured about 4 a.m. in the 3300 block of Herman Avenue after officers received a report of a prowler at a house in the nearby 3300 block of 31st Street. O’Donnell was captured after he was spotted running from the house, police said.

O’Donnell was taken back to jail and held on suspicion of escape and attempted burglary, police said.

He had escaped sometime between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, sheriff’s deputies said, and was discovered missing during a nightly count. Officials said he may have escaped by mingling with other inmates who were being released.
