Gushing about the Dodgers in terms used extensively by Manager Tom Lasorda, Brett Butler and Bob Ojeda said today their dreams were fulfilled when they were obtained by Los Angeles.

“If I could pick my life, it wouldn’t be any better than it is right now,” Butler said at a Dodger Stadium news conference. “A dream came true for me when I was acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was a dream that started when I was 6 years old with my father.

“I agreed to this (a 3-year, $10 million contract last Friday) on the day of my father’s birthday. He died in 1984, when he was 49 years old.”

Butler, 33, who was with the San Francisco Giants last season, was born in Los Angeles.

Ojeda, acquired Saturday in a trade with the New York Mets for outfielder Hubie Brooks, was equally thrilled.

“When (New York general manager) Frank Cashen called, I was so happy I was almost too happy,” the 32-year-old California native said. “The Dodgers are always in the race--you can never count them out.

“When I was driving in here, I saw the palm trees and heard oldies on the radio. It was like being back in ‘Cali.’ I feel like a little kid, having a uniform with ‘Dodgers’ on it.”
