IRVINE : New Post Office to Open in 1992

A new main post office, more than twice the size of the city’s current U.S. Postal Service office, is expected to open in late 1992 to handle the growing population.

The new facility, which will be built in the Irvine Spectrum area on Sand Canyon Avenue, will cost about $14 million, said Robert Edstedt, spokesman for the postmaster.

The existing post office on Murphy Avenue will be renovated as part of the expansion to include more postal boxes and counter service, Edstedt said. The postal service outgrew the Murphy Avenue office in 1988 and serves some of its carrier routes from an annex nearby, he said.

“The growth in Irvine has really been remarkable the past few years,” Edstedt said. The city is expected to grow from about 110,000 now to 172,000 at the end of the decade, he said.

The new main office will accept bulk business mail for the first time in Irvine, saving customers from having to take their bulk mail to Santa Ana, he said.
