Taiwan Deputies Erupt in Protest
Opposition deputies punched police, screamed insults and hurled books Tuesday in Taiwan’s Parliament in protest over the jailing of a well-known dissident.
As alarm bells sounded, Parliament Speaker Liang Su-yung called at least 50 uniformed police officers into the room in a vain effort to halt disruptions by members of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party.
Screaming opposition members ripped out microphones and tried to clamber atop the speaker’s dais to demand freedom for Democratic Progressive Party member Huang Hwa, who was found guilty this month of plotting sedition against the island’s Nationalist government.
