San Marino : City Manager Reassigned
The City Council has reassigned City Manager John E. Nowak to work on special projects involving legal issues, waste disposal and revision of the Municipal Code. Administrative Services Officer Keith Till has assumed the role of acting city manager.
Council members and Nowak said the changes, which were announced last week and went into effect Dec. 1, do not represent dissatisfaction with the city manager’s performance.
Instead, the officials said they wanted to give Nowak time to guide San Marino’s defense in a lawsuit involving a former Monterey Park toxic dump. In an attempt to spread the liability for polluting the dump, 65 major corporations sued 29 cities, including San Marino, as well as the state Department of Transportation and Los Angeles County.
Nowak has 18 months remaining on his contract.
“Who can say what may happen six months from now, but as of now, I intend to finish my term,” he said.
