Butler Tops Men’s Field in Table Tennis Finals
Jim Butler of Iowa City, Iowa became the men’s singles champion at the United States Table Tennis Assn. National Championships at the San Diego Convention Center Sunday.
Butler defeated John Onifade of Washington D.C., 13-21, 21-23, 21-16, 21-18, 21-13.
In the women’s singles division, Wei Wang of Pasadena defeated Lillie Hugh of Cocoa, Fla., 21-14, 21-9, 21-8.
The top five men and top four women made the U.S. National team and will travel to Japan in March.
Besides Butler and Onifade, Sean O’Neill of McLean, Va, Eric Boggan of Merrick, N.Y. and Chartchain Teekaveerakit of McLean, Va., also made the team.
Along with Wang and Hugh, Insook Bhushan of Aurora, Colo. and Diana Gee of San Carlos also made the women’s team.
