Two people have died as the result of injuries suffered in a head-on collision Sunday in Santa Paula when a sedan driven by Jennifer Laubacher, 20, of Oxnard drifted off South Mountain Road and skidded into oncoming traffic, an official from the California Highway Patrol said.
Laubacher, a distant relative of former Ventura County Supervisor Tom Laubacher, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Passenger Leanne Riley, 20, of Saticoy died later Sunday at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital.
Another passenger, Mark Castro, 20, of Santa Paula, is in critical condition at Ventura County Medical Center. None of the three was wearing a seat belt, the CHP said.
Laubacher was traveling west on South Mountain Road, east of Balcom Canyon Road at 8:40 a.m. Sunday. For unknown reasons, she drifted off the road, lost control and skidded across both lanes of traffic. She hit Tom Moore, 75, of Santa Paula, who was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt and driving a full-sized pickup truck.
