A Vista mother accused of killing her adopted son had a Jan. 24 preliminary hearing date scheduled Monday.

Cheri Mildred Adams, 34, who had pleaded not guilty to a charge of killing 17-month-old Bryan Adams, made a brief appearance before San Diego Municipal Court Judge Larry Stirling with her new attorney, William Rafael.

The boy, who had Down’s syndrome, died from an apparent beating on Nov. 27 and had multiple bruises on his head and face, according to court records.

The mother called 911 that morning, saying she found her son on the floor face down in his bedroom and not breathing.

Her husband, James Adams, 27, was in Honolulu, where he was stationed with the Navy.

Adams remains in custody at jail at Las Colinas in Santee in lieu of $250,000 bail.
