Kevin McReynolds and the New York Mets have agreed to a contract extension that will keep McReynolds in New York for at least three more years and make him another of baseball’s $3-million players.

The Mets announced the extension today at a news conference.

The extension takes effect in 1992 and is worth $10 million, with a Mets’ option for a fourth year at $3.6 million. McReynolds was given a $1.25-million signing bonus and will earn $3 million in 1992, $3.25 million in ’93 and $2.5 million in ’94.

McReynolds, 31, will earn $2.1 million next season in the third year of a $5.5-million deal. He had been seeking a three-year extension worth $10.5 million, and without an extension could have filed for free agency after the 1991 season.

McReynolds hit .269 last season with 24 home runs and 82 RBIs, his fourth consecutive season with 20 or more home runs. He is a .270 career hitter over seven full seasons, with 167 homers and 621 RBIs.

With the addition of outfielders Vince Coleman and Hubie Brooks, it’s not certain if McReynolds will stay in left field or move to center.
