$100,000 Raised for New Life Clinic

Narconon Chilocco New Life Center in Oklahoma will receive $100,000 in net proceeds from the “Look Who’s Talking Too” premiere screening and after-party on Dec. 13 at Columbia Studios. Stars Kirstie Alley and John Travolta hosted. Alley, the national spokeswoman for the drug rehabilitation center, completed the New Life program 11 years ago. Proceeds will go toward a new center.

* Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center received a $10,000 check from Roger Lund of Capital Cities/ABC in early December. The money will help build a home-like recreation area at the Chalet, the only skilled nursing facility in Los Angeles County for HIV-positive patients

* American Diabetes Assn., Los Angeles chapter, received $8,200 from the Tour de Penguin bicycle tour held in September and October. The money was raised through pledges. Perry Jaster was event chair.

* Marianne Frostig Center of Educational Therapy in Pasadena netted $70,000 from its 15th Annual Harvey and Chris Korman Celebrity Invitational Golf and Tennis Tournament. The tournament was held Nov. 16 through 18 at Indian Wells. The money will help send learning-disabled children to the center. The event was sponsored by American Airlines.

* Family Service of Los Angeles received a $25,000 check on Dec. 6 from the Associates of Family Service of Los Angeles, proceeds from an annual Holiday Boutique. Family Service is celebrating its 60th year in Los Angeles County.

* Pasadena Symphony Assn. recently received a $10,000 grant from Mervyn’s to create a High School Assembly Concert Series. The project will bring a chamber orchestra of 50 musicians into the schools.

* Bienvenidos Children’s Center in West Covina received holiday cheer from the families of the Altadena Parent Participation Nursery School. The parents provided a party, with Santa and toys and clothing, for the children at Bienvenidos, a nonsectarian emergency shelter for abused and neglected children under the age of 3. Many of the center’s newborns have mothers who used drugs during their pregnancies. Some of the older children have been abandoned.

* Santiago High School’s varsity and junior varsity girls basketball tournament received $500 from the Garden Grove Elks Lodge No. 1952. The money will be used to provide awards for participants in the 24-game tournament.
