All That Jazz: Long Beach-based jazz station KLON-FM will soon be heard by a much wider audience. The public radio station began on Friday the two-month process of building a new transmitter to increase its signal. With the new transmitter, the station’s power will increase from its current 1,200 watts to 8,000 watts, enabling the mainstream jazz station to potentially double its audience to about 7.5 million by next month. Jazz fans have been dealt some hard blows recently as radio stations have dropped the format in favor of more commercial music. Longtime jazz station KKGO changed its format to classical last year and started an AM jazz station--KKJZ--that folded in September.
