David Wheaton and Zina Garrison pounded out a 2-1 victory over Switzerland today to earn a berth in the final of the Hopman Cup team tennis championship.

The top-seeded Americans will meet Goran Prpic and Monica Seles of fifth-seeded Yugoslavia in the final on Thursday night. Yugoslavia beat the French pair of Guy Forget and Catherine Tanvier 2-1 in the other semifinal on Tuesday night.

The mixed doubles proved decisive for the Americans as Wheaton and Garrison rallied from a break down in the first set to beat the Swiss team of Jakob Hlasek and Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere, 7-5, 6-2.

Garrison earlier beat Maleeva-Fragniere, 6-2, 7-5, in the opening singles, but Hlasek then downed Wheaton, 6-3, 6-2.

Garrison served solidly in an error-filled match against her Bulgarian-born opponent. The Wimbledon finalist took just 97 minutes to clinch the win.

Hlasek served and volleyed superbly against Wheaton, winning every point on which he succeeded with his first serve.

Hlasek also returned brilliantly, keeping the pressure on Wheaton with a combination of power and accuracy. Wheaton made an increasing number of errors as the match progressed.

The Swiss began the mixed doubles in strong form, taking a 4-1 lead, but gradually were worn down by the Americans.

The 12-nation exhibition at the Burswood Superdome is one of a series of warm-up tournaments before the Australian Open, which begins Jan. 14 in Melbourne.
