“Fun on the Move,” the city of Carson float that featured Betty Boop in a hot yellow convertible, was awarded the Governor’s Trophy in the Rose Parade Tuesday for best depiction of life in California.

The float, the first Carson entry to win an award in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade, may also be the last of its line. Carson officials on Wednesday reiterated their doubts that the cash-strapped city will be able to pay even a portion of the $88,000 needed for a 1992 entry.

Instead, city officials say they hope the award will boost private fund-raising efforts.

“I think, from a marketing point of view, this really helps,” Mayor Vera Robles DeWitt said.

Carol Ann Mori, vice chairwoman of the Carson Rose Float Assn., said the award produced “a bittersweet feeling.”

“The reality is that this may have been our last float,” Mori said. The association has so far raised $5,000.
