Nebraska football Coach Tom Osborne says there is no truth to rumors he is quitting because of health problems.

Osborne said the confusion probably began after he told his players about a recent abnormal heart test reading that proved to be a false alarm.

“I want to be sure to dispel any rumors that I’m having health problems or that I’m quitting. If anybody heard it that way, it was a mistake,” he said.

The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Wednesday without attribution that Osborne has talked privately about retiring.

Osborne, who had double-bypass heart surgery in February, 1985, said he routinely undergoes electrocardiogram heart testing every eight months. The most recent, he said, was about three weeks ago.

“I had an EKG that wasn’t right,” he said. “So I went back in about 10 days later, and they did some pretty extensive tests.”

“Everything was fine,” Osborne said.
