COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : No. 6 Ohio State Downs Iowa

Jamaal Brown and Jim Jackson each sank two free throws in the final 30 seconds Thursday night, and sixth-ranked Ohio State slipped past No. 22 Iowa, 63-59, in a Big Ten Conference opener at Columbus, Ohio.

Chris Street of Iowa (11-2) scored with 1:16 left to tie the score, 59-59, but Brown made two free throws with 30 seconds left and Jackson added two more with four seconds remaining.

Jackson scored 20 points for Ohio State (11-0), Treg Lee had 12 and Brown added 11.

Acie Earl and James Moses scored 16 points each for Iowa, which had its 10-game winning streak broken.

No. 7 North Carolina 108, Cornell 64--At Ithaca, N.Y., the Tar Heels sank four three-point shots on the way to a 22-9 lead and won their eighth consecutive game.

Rick Fox scored 19 points for North Carolina (10-1), and George Lynch had 15. Rich Medina scored 16 points for Cornell (6-3).

No. 25 Michigan State 85, Michigan 70--Steve Smith scored 24 points and Matt Steigenga added 20 as the Spartans opened defense of their Big Ten championship by defeating the Wolverines at East Lansing, Mich.

The victory was No. 250 for Jud Heathcote, who is 250-173 in 15 seasons at Michigan State. The Spartans are 8-3; Michigan is 7-4.
