Tackling the Roads Together

Share

The Ventura County Transportation Commission meets on the first Friday of the month at 10:30 a.m. in the Camarillo City Council Chambers. Citizens are encouraged to attend the meetings or to mail their comments and concerns about transportation to us at 950 County Square Drive, No. 207, Ventura 93003. We encourage your participation as we work together to solve the transportation problems this county faces now and in the future.

The membership of the Transportation Commission is defined in the State Public Utilities Code: “Two members of the Board of Supervisors, three council members selected from among the ten cities, two citizen appointees, and one non-voting member appointed by the governor.” This structure was established to allow citizens and officials to set the priorities for Ventura County transportation improvements. If we did not have a Transportation Commission, its responsibilities would be shifted by the state to a regional agency in downtown Los Angeles. This is not the type of representation the residents of Ventura County deserve.

The membership of the Transportation Commission reflects one of its most important responsibilities: To establish project priorities and coordinate activities between the cities and the county. This task can only be accomplished fairly with a board consisting of both city and county representatives, and extensive public input.

In the upcoming year, the VCTC will be working on congestion management planning, improving access to the Port of Hueneme, determination of project conformance with the County Airports Land Use Plan, implementation of intercity and commuter rail projects, establishment of an updated highway improvement priority list and supporting improvements to local and intercity transit.

Since it was formally established in 1989, the Transportation Commission has demonstrated that this county is capable of setting its own transportation programs and priorities. These are significant accomplishments and ones which we should build upon. We urge you all to join us in this effort.

SUPERVISOR SUSAN LACEY, chairwoman
