Obituaries : Dr. Joseph Gross; Retired Surgeon

Dr. Joseph Gross, who worked as an emergency room surgeon at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Woodland Hills for about 15 years, has died at his Encino home. He was 85.

Gross died Thursday of complications of Alzheimer’s disease, said his brother, Dr. Alex Gross.

Born Nov. 15, 1905, in the Soviet Union, Gross came to the United States as a child and was raised in Cleveland. He graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School in Kentucky in 1930 and practiced as an obstetrician and gynecologist in Cleveland for more than 30 years. In 1970 he moved to California where he came out of retirement to work full time for Kaiser until the mid-1980s. Gross, who enjoyed golfing, was a member of the Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

He is survived by a son, Paul Gross of Canyon Country; and two brothers, Dr. Alex Gross and Dr. Sol Gross, both of Encino. At his request, no services are planned. Alpha Cremation Society in Burbank is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Gross’ name to the United Way.
