EL TORO : Hepatitis Shots to Be Given at Air Station

Share

Officials at the Marine Corps Air Station announced Friday that everyone associated with its day-care center will be inoculated after three children and three adults in the last month have tested positive for the hepatitis A virus.

“We’re estimating between 800 and 2,000 people will have to be vaccinated--parents, kids, people on the base or anyone who feels they’ve come into contact,” Master Sgt. Jake Rodrigues said.

About 80 people have already received vaccinations against the illness, which usually lasts one to two weeks.

The six positive cases were all associated with the same classroom at the Child Development Center, which has about 400 children in all, Rodrigues said. The first case was diagnosed on Dec. 11, but officials do not know where the virus originated.

No children are being allowed back into the center until they have been inoculated, Rodrigues said.

Anyone with concerns should contact the Orange County Public Health Office, Rodrigues said.
