CENTURY LEAGUE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Baytosh’s Overtime Work Helps El Modena Beat Foothill
El Modena High School guard Bob Baytosh scored seven points in overtime to lead the Vanguards to a 65-59 victory over Foothill in a Century League opener Friday night at Foothill High School.
Vanguard center Aaron Aguilera sank a free throw with 1:27 left to tie the score, 54-54. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation.
In overtime, Baytosh hit a three-point basket and was four for four at the free throw line to give El Modena (10-6, 1-0) a 63-59 lead with 17 seconds remaining. Aguilera hit the game’s final basket with one second left. He led the Vanguards in scoring with 20 points.
Foothill (6-9, 0-1) led, 23-13, with 6:04 remaining in the second quarter, but Aguilera and Mike Terry rallied the Vanguards to a 29-27 halftime lead.
El Modena took a 39-32 lead at 4:21 of the third quarter on Baytosh’s basket, but the Knights tied the score at 49 with 4:08 left in the fourth quarter and led, 52-49, on Jared Winger’s three-point basket at 3:39.
Foothill had the final shot in regulation but Sean Amos, who led Knight scorers with 21 points, put up a 15-footer with three seconds remaining that bounced out.
