A Call for Letting ‘Voting by Pocketbook’ Determine the Value of Artworks

In all this discussion about artists’ First Amendment rights, no one mentions that perhaps along with these rights should go the moral obligation of responsibility. So many people, especially young music fans, tend to be highly influenced by artists. The artists should take that into consideration and act responsibly. It’s part of the job, the price you pay for being famous.

I think that some, not all, music personalities use sex and violence, etc., to make up for lack of talent. Sensationalize or exploit the controversial and the rebellious young teens will buy it up. This is not to say that everything controversial is bad.

I firmly believe in the ideal, “I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Let’s hope that artists develop a social conscience when addressing the problems and everyday issues that affect their fans.
