COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Van Scoyoc Gets Going Late, Helps Golden West Win

Ric Van Scoyoc, unimpressive for the first 30 minutes, was the difference in the final 10 as Golden West College defeated Fullerton, 96-93, Saturday night in an Orange Empire Conference basketball game at Golden West.

Van Scoyoc, a sophomore guard, had no points, one assist and three fouls in the first half as Golden West took a 48-46 lead. He scored his first basket early in the second half but got his fourth foul with 16:50 left and went to the bench with the Rustlers ahead, 58-52.

Van Scoyoc and Jason Vaughan, who also had four fouls, returned with 9:57 left and Golden West holding a 68-67 lead. Van Scoyoc scored 10 of Golden West’s next 15 points and had assists on two others baskets by Scott Campbell as the Rustlers made it 83-77.

Fullerton rallied to within 93-90 on a layup by Kenny Cross with 19 seconds left. Van Scoyoc was fouled and made both free throws to make it 95-90 with 17 seconds remaining.

Fullerton’s Bob Terry missed a three-pointer, and Golden West’s Tom Dever was fouled after picking up the loose ball. He made one of two free throws with five seconds left to give the Rustlers a 96-90 lead.

Fullerton’s Gary Lira made a three-pointer as time expired.

Dever came off the bench to score a game-high 20 for Golden West (10-10, 2-0 in conference). Vaughan had 18, Darren Ernst 17 and Campbell 16. Van Scoyoc finished with 14 points and five assists.

Gary Hunter had 24 and Cross and Terry had 16 each for Fullerton (11-9, 0-2).
