COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Turnover Spoils Antelope Valley’s Plans

Share

At worst, the coaching staff of the Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team figured the Marauders were looking at overtime in their Foothill Conference game against Mt. San Jacinto on Saturday night.

Seems reasonable enough. The score was tied, Antelope Valley had possession and one of the nation’s best shooters, J. R. Rider, had the ball in his hands.

A few moments later, however, the worst-case scenario played itself out as Antelope Valley lost, 69-67, at Mt. San Jacinto, snapping the Marauders’ 15-game conference win streak.

Antelope Valley’s Tony Madison set the stage by burying a three-point shot to tie the score, 67-67, with 21 seconds left. Mt. San Jacinto (6-11, 2-2 in conference play) then turned the ball over and Antelope Valley (13-4, 3-1) called a timeout with 11 seconds remaining.

Rider turned the ball over, however, and after a Mt. San Jacinto miss, Aaron Butler tossed in a follow shot at the buzzer.
