OJAI : Recycling Response Exceeds Prediction

Ojai residents are living up to their environmental image by recycling more materials than even their optimistic trash hauler expected last year.

The city began its curbside recycling program in mid-October with its refuse hauler, E.J. Harrison & Sons Inc.

As many as 85% of the firm’s 1,800 residential customers in Ojai are participating in the weekly program, company Vice President Jim Harrison said Friday.

The participation rate in other Ventura County communities the company serves is 70% to 80%, he said.

“We knew Ojai would participate at a high rate because the people are really environmentally tuned in,” Harrison said. “But it’s been better than expected. Ojai is doing real well.”

Between 500 and 600 residences are setting out the 45-gallon recycling containers each week, he said.

Combined, they average 12 tons of recyclable materials hauled out of Ojai weekly.

“I expected about 10 tons a week,” Harrison said. Some weeks the total has been as high as 23 tons.
