New NCAA Scheduling Limit Makes Northridge a More Attractive Foe

Share

Delegates at the NCAA Convention in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday inadvertently gave Cal State Northridge coaches an assist with their scheduling.

Proposition 44 limits the number of nonconference games Division I schools can play against Division II and Division III opponents, making contests against Division I independents such as Northridge more appealing.

“In our geographic area, with all the Division I schools, it will really help our scheduling,” said Bob Hiegert, CSUN’s athletic director.

In another move, Division II delegates reinstated contact in 10 of the 15 allowable spring football practice sessions. Contact was allowed until last season. CSUN is a member of the Division II Western Football Conference but competes in Division I in all other sports.

Among the measures delegates will consider today is Prop. 53, which would require that a school’s athletic program be classified in the same division in all sports, and Prop. 54, which would create a third Division I football classification.
