It’s ‘Flan-Tastic’: The Green Burrito chain of Mexican-style fast-food restaurants has started serving a dessert that might be new to many non-Latinos.

As its first dessert item, the fast-growing Santa Ana-based chain has chosen flan, a egg custard topped with a caramel sauce, found in Spain and South America.

GB Foods Corp., parent company of the Green Burrito, said it has been seeking a dessert to round out its menu of Mexican specialties. GB Chairman Ruben Rodriguez said “flan is very popular with Hispanics, and with it, we believe we can attract a larger share of the Hispanic market into our restaurants.” But when it came to a name for the new dessert, the Green Burrito gave it a distinctly Anglo ring: “Flan-Tastic.”
