Sanchez Falls to Fleurian at N.Z. Open
Top-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain fell to unheralded Jean-Philippe Fleurian of France, and a pair of Swedes were ousted by food poisoning today in the quarterfinals of the $175,000 New Zealand Open.
The 25-year-old Fleurian swept past Sanchez 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), playing aggressive tennis to knock out the Spaniard, who is ranked No. 8 in the world.
Meanwhile, fourth seed Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia and fifth seed Luiz Mattar of Brazil were given walkovers to the semifinals when Lars Jonsson and Christian Bergstrom both were forced to withdraw. The tournament physician pronounced both Swedish players unfit to play because of food poisoning.
