Castelnuovo-Tedesco: “Platero y Yo”; Guitar Quintet; Tonadilla. Andres Segovia, guitar; Quintetto Chigiano. MCA Classics MCAD-10056. Volume eight of the Segovia Collection reissues brings us a big, sweeping recording of the Quintet, from 1955, which reminds us how much has been lost in the emotionally pallid efforts common now. Like Heifetz in similar fare, Segovia was able to make this repertory sound vastly more exciting and important than it seems in other hands. The solos--only 10 of the “Platero” 28--are typically fluid and deep-toned, making a compelling case for some of the best of the Segovia-inspired literature.
