A 48-year-old Palm Springs woman was killed and a man seriously injured Friday when their car collided head-on with a train in Wilmington, Los Angeles police said.

Carol Kott was pronounced dead on arrival at Long Beach Memorial Hospital after the 9:10 p.m. accident, said Officer Ed Kirbus of the department’s South Traffic Division.

The driver of the car, a 56-year-old man whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was in critical condition at the Long Beach hospital Saturday, authorities said. The driver may have been under the influence of alcohol when the collision occurred, Kirbus said.

The man was driving west on the 2700 block of East Anaheim Street, Kirbus said, when he failed to stop at flashing railroad warning signs and rammed into an approaching, slow-moving Southern Pacific locomotive.
