SANTA ANA : 4 More Schools to Operate Year-Round

Four more Santa Ana elementary schools will begin a year-round schedule in July as the district continues efforts to deal with its record enrollment.

The district’s Board of Education voted to place Adams, Garfield, Hoover and Washington elementary schools on a year-round schedule, leaving only eight of the district’s 26 elementary schools on a traditional nine-month calendar.

The four schools have a combined enrollment of 3,621 students. That figure is expected to climb to nearly 4,000 students by the 1994-95 school year, said John Bennett, assistant superintendent of the district’s elementary division.

The board’s decision was not a popular one among a group of about 25 parents who wanted the four schools to remain on a traditional calendar.

“We are against it totally,” said parent Maryann Castillo. “Most of us work one or two shifts and we can’t afford to pay baby-sitters for the amount of time the kids are off. We’re already having problems as it is.”
