Retired basketball star Julius “Dr. J.” Erving provided the narration for “Lincoln Portrait” by the late composer Aaron Copland during a two-hour concert dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Monday night tribute to the black civil rights leader, who was shot to death in 1968 and would have been 62 years old today, featured the Philadelphia Orchestra and was televised by cable TV’s Arts & Entertainment Network.

In “Lincoln Portrait,” Erving read Abraham Lincoln’s recollection of a dream at a time of strife to the background of Copland’s haunting score.
