Gov. Pete Wilson today appointed Matt Fong, the son of California Secretary of State March Fong Eu, to replace convicted felon Paul Carpenter on the State Board of Equalization.

Fong’s appointment to the $95,052-per-year post requires confirmation by both the state Senate and Assembly.

Carpenter was reelected to a second term on the powerful but obscure tax board in November even though his September conviction on four felony political corruption charges barred him from holding office. Carpenter is currently appealing a pending 12-year sentence to federal prison.

Fong, a 37-year-old Los Angeles attorney, was the unsuccessful Republican nominee last year for state controller.

His mother, a Democrat, was reelected to her fifth four-year term as the state’s chief elections officer in the same election.
